Deck Sealing
You will need to stain or seal your wood deck to protect it from the sun, rain, snow, and wind damage. Sealing a deck will extend the life span of your deck. Most sealants are transparent or lightly tinted and provide excellent protection against moisture. Staining seams to provide better protection against UV damage because of the darker pigments. You should apply stain or sealant soon after the deck is completed and every few years afterwards. Drip some water on the deck, if it doesn't bead up instantly you should apply a new sealant. Clean the deck and allow it to dry before sealing. You may need to sand down rough areas and use a stripper to remove any previous stains or sealants before reapplying. Follow the manufacturer's instructions. You can apply the sealant using a pump sprayer or a brush. Try to use a thin even coating. You may need to apply two coats for maximum coverage. Use a fine brush for railings and detailed areas. |
